Preserving African languages by teaching them in the Diaspora

Africa is home to approximately one-third of the world's languages. There are at least 75 languages in Africa which have more than one million speakers. The rest are spoken by populations ranging from a few hundred to several hundred thousand speakers. Most of the languages are primarily oral with little available in written form.

Niger-Congo

~1,350–1,650 languages — the largest family in the world. Includes Swahili (200m speakers), Yoruba (45m), Igbo (30m), Fula (35m). ~600m speakers total.

Afroasiatic

~200–300 languages across Northern Africa. Includes Hausa, Somali, Amharic. 400–500m speakers.

Nilo-Saharan

~80 languages across Eastern and North Eastern Africa. ~70m speakers.

Austronesian

~11–12 languages, primarily Madagascar and Comoros. ~20m speakers.

Khoisan

~40–70 languages, the oldest language family, mainly Namibia and Botswana. ~300,000–400,000 speakers.

Tutor with us

Join our language school by teaching the largest community of African language learners in the diaspora. No specific certification or teaching experience is required. We welcome teachers who love Africa, its people, language and culture — who enjoy sharing knowledge with children and adults and have strong communication skills.
